Aging Well as a Psychotherapist in the 21st Century

Maximilian E. Fuentes Fuhrmann, PhD, ABPP

Present: Aging Well as a Psychotherapist in the 21st Century

3 CE Credits

Psychotherapists work in a profession in which one’s abilities can continue to improve, mature, and grow. Some psychotherapists have worked into their 10th decade of life. Do you need to “retire”? What will that mean for you? To answer this question, the biological, psychological, and social aspects of healthy aging will be discussed. Myths and stereotypes and internalized ageist beliefs will be addressed. Factors contributing to longevity will be explored.

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to: Apply three approaches to aging well as a therapist in the 21st century; list at least three symptoms which differentiate normative late life memory changes from those which are a consequence of disease; describe at least four risk factors for developing a neurocognitive disorder in later life; list three components which can contribute to a successful transition into retirement or semi-retirement as a psychotherapist.
