Fostering equity, diversity and belonging in our clients

 

with Dr. Susana A. López, PhD (she/her/ella)

Presenter:

Dr. Susana A. López is a bicultural and bilingual (English/Spanish) licensed clinical psychologist and professor at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo who focuses on issues of diversity, equity, inclusivity and belonging. She is the co-founder and co-director of the clinic Resilience Psychological Collaborative, Inc in Atascadero, CA. She specializes in culturally-humble and healing-informed psychological interventions, assessment and teaching for individuals who have experienced marginalization and oppression. As an immigrant, Dr. López has a passion for working with individuals and researching issues related to life transitions including immigration/acculturation processes, trauma and resilience, and life disruptions. 

Dr. López received her bachelor’s and master’s degree in psychology from Cal Poly, SLO and went on to complete her doctorate training at the University of Santa Barbara, CA where she graduated with a degree in Counseling, Clinical and School Psychology. She then completed an APA-Approved predoctoral internship at USC/Los Angeles Children Hospital in community mental health with a focus on pediatric psychology followed by a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior in family psychology. Dr. López focuses on fostering the mental health resilience of communities through advocacy, assessment, psychotherapy, consultation, research, and teaching. She uses all these wonderful experiences gained over the last 15 years to inform her teaching, scholarship and clinical practice.

Topic:

This talk will expand on culturally humble practice through discussion of theory and applications within mental health. Dr. López will guide participants to explore the norms of mental health services and potential changes needed to promote equity in access and engagement in mental health services. The goal is to increase awareness of multiple dimensions of diversity in order to prepare clinicians to work proficiently, humbly and effectively with a multicultural population.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • Identify 3 elements of privilege and oppression that impact the culture of mental health.
  • Describe 3 systemic and internalized -isms and how these powers impact clients within the therapeutic milieu.
  • Utilize modifications to evidence based practice that can increase cultural competence and help support the decolonization of their practice (e.g. eliminating processes of intentional and unintentional oppression and discrimination).

Continuing Education:

CPA is co-sponsoring with Santa Barbara County Psychological Association (SBCPA) and Ventura County Psychological Association (VCPA). The California Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CPA maintains responsibilities for this program and its contents. CPA co-sponsored credit is also accepted by the Board of Behavioral Sciences for their licensees.

Those who attend the workshop and complete the CPA evaluation form will receive (1.5) continuing education credits. Please note that APA CE rules require that we give credit only to those who attend the entire workshop. Those arriving more than 15 minutes after the start time or leaveing before the workshop is completed will not receive CE credits.
